Dé miyé ye - About me
Wóokiye Wiŋ is Sisíthuŋwaŋ Waȟpéthuŋwaŋ Dakhóta. She is an artist, illustrator, and teacher with a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Indian Studies with a Language Track from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. She has taught preschool and high school in Saint Paul, MN, as a Dakhóta language instructor. Her language mentor was the respected elder Caroline Schommer of the Upper Sioux Community.
Wóokiye Wiŋ is currently a freelance artist and language teacher. She creates earrings, paintings, and illustrations for Dakhóta language books and curriculum, which will soon be available. Her hide-painted earrings are featured at the Indigenous First gallery in Duluth, MN. Drawing from both her Ojibwe and Dakhóta heritage, she infuses her cultural background into her artwork. She spent much of her childhood on her mother’s reservation, Fond Du Lac in northern Minnesota, before moving to her father’s reservation at Upper Sioux Community in southwestern Minnesota.
Now residing in Saint Paul, Minnesota, with her husband and children, Wóokiye Wiŋ carries on her family’s artistic tradition, following in the footsteps of her artist parents. You can find her work on Instagram@wookiye_win and explore her books at www.dakhota.org.
